Abstract Content
This poster will guide the new thermal analyst through two of the most demanding areas of analytical science. Its intent is to make a difficult task easy. The difficulty of defining the appropriate thermal analytical technique and how to develop a thermal method for that technique are simplified.

This poster guides the analyst through a series of questions regarding the sample material and the analyst’s expectations which lead to the proverbial questions of: “When are the analyses needed?” and “How accurate must it be?”

Once these questions are answered, the thermal analyst must select the appropriate thermal technique. Thermal techniques are defined with a comprehensive list of respective applications. A review of these techniques (DSC, TGA, and DMA) may indicate more than one thermal technique is required to best understand the entire material situation.

A complimentary section of this poster lists thermal analytical techniques with methods that may be similar to the thermal analyst’s needs. The thermal analyst may refer to a list comprised of more than fifty traditional ASTM tests. Additional expert knowledge may be required to finalize the method and /or interpret the data. A brief list of expert resources completes this poster.

Expert thermal analysis knowledge must be gained by today’s “almost expert” thermal analyst so that their company can be responsive to the market place. This poster will help close the thermal-knowledge gap, but this is just the beginning. Academia, local thermal analysis forums, and thermal analysis instrument manufacturers, should develop training programs to complement and extend the knowledge base.
