Course Description
Near IR and Raman Spectroscopy have become important tools for at line and on line analysis in a variety of industries. This course will serve as a practical, non-mathematical, introduction to NIR and Raman spectroscopy and their applications in industry. It is aimed at chemists and engineers who need a practical understanding of NIR and or Raman spectroscopy. Near IR and Raman spectroscopy are versatile process analytical technologies. Numerous example applications of NIR and Raman spectroscopy will be described including raw material identification, moisture prediction, excipient quality control, tablet content uniformity, and online process control. Relevant regulatory guidance (FDA and USP) will also be discussed. The relative advantages of Raman and NIR with other optical spectroscopic methods will also be discussed.

Target Audience
The course assumes little or no experience with NIR or Raman. The course is ideal for lab chemists, quality scientists, engineers, and managers who need to learn the basics of Near IR or Raman spectroscopy. Course Instructor's Biography
Dr. Frederick H. Long has been doing analytical spectroscopy professionally for over fifteen years. He established Spectroscopic Solutions in the summer of 2001. Spectroscopic Solutions provides consulting and training in the areas of process analytical technology, spectroscopy, and statistics for regulated and non regulated industries. His firm has done work for numerous international pharmaceutical, consumer health-care companies, and scientific instrumentation suppliers. Spectroscopic Solutions has provided training for numerous firms including Johnson & Johnson, Sanofi-Aventis, Schering-Plough, Astra-Zeneca, Wyeth, and Novartis. Dr. Long has published over forty peer-reviewed publications in many areas of spectroscopy including Raman and NIR spectroscopy, ultra-fast and non-linear phenomena, and the optics of human tissue. He received his S.B. and S.M. in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from Columbia University.
