Course Description
This course is designed to provide practical information and an overview of liquid chromatographic and related techniques beyond the introductory level. Attendees will become familiar with a range of techniques necessary for solving advanced, difficult separation problems. Focus will be on detection methods used in chromatography and considerations in correctly using detectors; the nature of the stationary phase; the development of efficient methods in reversed-phase and related techniques; supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC); size-exclusion chromatography (SEC); and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS). Participants are encouraged to bring problems for discussion and troubleshooting.

Target Audience
Students are expected to have basic knowledge of separation theory and are interested in deepening their practical knowledge of different condensed phase chromatographic techniques. Previous students included chemists who would use these techniques (and occasionally supervisors) in pharmaceutical, forensic, chemical analysis, and military laboratories.

Course Outline
This course is a modified version of the Advanced HPLC short course that has been successfully offered by the Chromatography Forum of the Delaware Valley (CFDV) for numerous years and will be very similar to the version of the course offered at HPLC2004. Five, 80-minute lectures will be presented by five, different practitioners. A Tentative Schedule (Order of Lectures May Shift; 10-minute breaks between lectures) 8:30–8:40 Introduction 8:40–10:00 Overviews on Selecting Detectors and Components of the Stationary Phase 10:10–11:30 Often Overlooked Separation Approaches: Reversed-Phase and Beyond 11:30–12:30 Lunch 12:30–1:50 Supercritical fluid 2:00–3:20 Size-exclusion chromatography 3:30–4:50 LC/MS

Course Instructor's Biography
Instructors have taught in previous versions of the CFDV Advanced HPLC course. Eric Williamsen (Coordinator, detectors, and stationary phases): Associate Professor, Ursinus College, Collegeville, PA Brian Bidlingmeyer (Often Overlooked Separation Approaches: Reversed-Phase and Beyond): Agilent, Wilmington, DE Joe Foley (Supercritical Fluid Chromatography): Professor, Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA Howard Barth (Size-exclusion; not confirmed but he has taught this section of the course for many years): DuPont (retired) The instructor for the LC/MS is not confirmed but we have several people who have taught that section in previous years.
