A novel approach to ion mobility spectrometry based on multidimensional ion mobility separations enabled portable high fidelity chemical detection and identification. A Multidimensional Ion Mobility Spectrometer (IMS) detection technology will be described as a means to improve the detection performance of the conventional ion mobility spectrometers. The multidimensional IMS works by interconnecting multiple ion mobility spectrometers to achieve multidimensional ion mobility separation. Unresolved chemical ions in the initial dimension (similar to a conventional IMS) can be further separated and identified in higher dimensions. The multidimensional IMS detector can achieve higher resolution and sensitivity with simultaneous positive and negative ion detection capability.
