Course Description
Intelligence and technical expertise contribute to making a successful scientist, but they are often not sufficient for strong and effective leadership. One of the most effective leadership skills involves coaching employees’ behaviors. Developing strong coaching skills and recognizing when to coach rather than manage or mentor is critical to good leadership. This hands-on workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to recognize their leadership strengths and to consider how to leverage them for maximum effectiveness. It will also allow participants to learn and practice 2 key coaching skills: active listening and asking powerful questions. Participants will also develop an action plan for continued practice of these skills in their work environments.

Target Audience
Anyone in a supervisory role in academia or industry: faculty, department chairs, deans, senior administrators, business managers, or executives.

Course Outline
Introductions and overview. Benefits of a coaching approach to leadership and how it differs from managing and mentoring. Identify strengths and motivators and then discuss with each other how they can leverage those characteristics as a leader. Presentation on 2 key coaching skills. View a video clip and evaluate observed coaching behaviors. Short listening assessment and an active listening activity followed by a large group discussion. Large group activity to practice forming powerful questions. Participants will then practice both active listening and powerful questions in practice coaching sessions. Design an action plan for continued practice of these skills and behaviors in their roles as leaders.
