Course Description
The course is based on the description of imaging based applications, specifically developed to be utilized at laboratory scale. Applications are referred both to classical (i.e. RGB and/or multi-spectral and advanced (i.e. hyperspectral) imaging. In this latter case, also chemiometric tools and procedures are introduced, described and critically evaluated in respect of the developed applications. Hardware and software architectures as well as utilized logics, procedures and algorithms are discussed and evaluated making a comparison of the different approaches in respect of the “quality” of the results. The attendees will thus evaluate the potentialities offered by Electronic Imaging (EI) in real problems solving at laboratory scale. Different applications, ranging from materials, food products, pharmaceuticals and their derived products characterization, will be presented.

Target Audience
Production and/or processing plant personnel, managers and engineers who want to understand the potentialities offered by EI in real problems solving at laboratory scale and their extension at industrial scale.

Course Outline
The solutions adopted and the results achieved will be presented and critically analyzed with reference to the implementation of EI based tools to utilize at laboratory scale to perform an inspection and/or a quality control of i) closed domains analysis, ii) primary and secondary raw materials, iii) recovered materials and derived products, iv) food products, v) pharmaceutical products, etc..

Course Instructor's Biography
Prof. Giuseppe Bonifazi is Full Professor of Raw Materials Engineering, Director of the Research and Service Centre for Sustainable Technological Innovation of La Sapienza. He has over 30 year experience in characterization and processing of primary and secondary raw materials with more than 250 papers. He took part in 12 EU Research Projects and has one patent on application of chemical imaging to kidney stones characterization. Main scientific and technical fields object of investigation: i) study of software and hardware integrated architectures for the synthesis, the classification and the recognition of complex 2D and 3D structures; ii) development and set up of procedures for the identification of objects and material using pattern recognition techniques based on classical and hyperspectral imaging techniques and iii) analysis and the application of methodologies to study and model industrial processes with reference to particulate solids material.
