Course Description
Control charts are easy to use statistical tools that allow laboratories to monitor and evaluate testing processes. Shewhart charts (I/MR, Xbar/R or Xbar/S charts) detect large shifts in process, while EWMA and CUSUM charts detect smaller shifts in the process. Participants of this course will learn how to implement control chart based quality (QA) program to evaluate analytical measurement system performance, maintain its stability and monitor its precision and bias. In this course we will present step by step implementation of QA program, statistical methods used in such program and practical guidelines for interpretation of analytical measurement system performance. This course was developed based on ASTM 2587, ASTM 6299 and ISO 7870-2,4,6 standards, on high level of theoretical knowledge and on many years of practical experience by both instructors.

Course Instructor's Biography
This course is taught by husband and wife, John H Carson Jr, PhD statistician and Polona K Carson, PhD, MBA analytical laboratory quality specialist. In his early career, John Carson started as a field remediation technician and while working obtained BA in mathematics and MS and PhD in mathematical statistics. He has worked on many projects involving application of statistics to problems in quality, analytical chemistry and environmental analysis. A few selected projects include development of a new method for determining lower limits of quantitation for measurement in analytical chemistry (LCMRL), response to the anthrax attacks, statistical models and a database system for the use of clams in real-time toxicity testing of drinking water sources. Polona Carson has almost 20 years of experience in analytical laboratory. She has a BS in Chemistry, MS and PhD in Agronomy (soil science) and Masters in Business Administration. She started as an intern in forestry laboratory and later became manager of this laboratory. She was a representative of Slovenia on Expert Panels for Laboratory Quality for European Forest Monitoring Program. She led implementation of laboratory quality ISO/IEC 17025, implemented and managed proficiency testing program for a network of 10 company testing laboratories in manufacturing and developed and led training for laboratory personnel. In 2007 Carson’s started P&J Carson Consulting, LLC to share their complementary expertise in statistics, analytical chemistry and testing laboratory quality by offering professional training, statistical consulting services, consulting and coaching to testing laboratories, and to users of analytical testing data.
