Course Description
Liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is a hyphenated technique which combines the separation power of liquid chromatography with the detection power of mass spectrometry. LC-MS has gained broad usage for analyte detection in many scientific areas such as clinical biochemistry, forensic science, food and beverage testing, combinatorial chemistry in the drug discovery process, life science research – the “omics”, and environmental testing. Improvements in the sensitivity and mass accuracy of LC/MS are an ongoing process, and skilled analysts are required to keep pace with these instrumentation advances. Liquid chromatography is a powerful tool for the separation of a mixture of components and high resolution mass spectrometry is essential for the unequivocal identification of the mass of an unknown compound. The objective of this course is to review the fundamentals of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry including the basic operation of all instrument components, data analysis, and troubleshooting for effective and efficient instrument operation.

- Brief overview of system components for HPLC and UHPLC
- Basic principles of chromatography, mass spectrometry (MS) and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS)
- Overview of ChemStation® and Chromeleon® software for operating the LC
- Use of mass spectrometer with the LC and as a stand alone device; overview of X-CaliburTM software for operating the MS
- Data Interpretation and instrument troubleshooting
- Structure elucidation from MS/MS data
- Maintenance of instruments for best results

Course Instructor's Biography
Ph.D.in Chemistry. Postdoctoral research in protein and nucleic acid chemistry. 15+ years experience in mass spectroscopy, liquid chromatography, GC and GC-MS. working in Thermo Fisher Scientific for 10 years. Member of ASMS Member of ACS Reagent committee.
