Course Description
Most chromatographers use the reversed phase mode in methods today and consider it the end all. But most have also experienced some problems with certain ionic compounds that cannot be retained, no matter what the pH or additive (ion pairing reagents) in this mode. Such problems can be solved by using the HILIC mode. The column used is silica gel or a polar bonded phase. The mobile phase is a combination of a polar organic and water, not the usual nonpolar mobile phase used with these packings. This course will allow the chromatographer to understand the HILIC mode and learn how it compliments the reversed phase mode for those problem separations. It will be illustrated with many examples of its use.

Target Audience
The target audience is the experienced chromatographer wanting to learn more about hydrophilic interaction chromatography. This will allow him or her to incorporate this mode into consideration for problematic reversed phase separations.

Course Instructor's Biography
Fred Rabel is the President of ChromHELP, LLC, consulting and teaching all of the liquid chromatography techniques (TLC, HPLC, Column Chromatography, and Sample Preparation). He previously worked for J.T.Baker Chemical Co., Whatman Inc., and EMD Chemicals. He is on the editorial boards of Journal of Liquid Chromatography and Related Techniques, and Journal of Chromatographic Science. He has been teaching HPLC courses for over 35 years. He has authored many chromatography articles and chapters.
